• Which Gems Should You Pick Up

    Gems in Path of Exile and their values

    With the recent influx of new players I see this question asked multiple times in chat channels, including my guild chat. There’s a ton of different gems and understanding their value when you’re just beginning with the game can be confusing for newbies. This post will provide you with some basic rules about (non-quality) gems and their value in Standard league so the next time you’re offered a choice after finishing a quest you’ll know exactly what to take.

    High(er) value gems

    Most gems in Path of Exile can be obtained from quests but some only drop from monsters, therefore they usually have higher prices.

    • Portal – drop-only gem, not particularly useful since Portal Scrolls drop in abundance but they can usually be sold for 1-3 Chaos Orbs.
    • Cast When Damage Taken – only rewarded from one quest in the game, “A Fixture of Fate” in Act III Merciless difficulty. Basically means that unless it drops for you (still rare), you can only get one of these gems on each character, so they are constantly being traded. Having a level 31 requirement also means it will take quite awhile until you’re able to get it, so the price is usually around 4-6 Chaos.
    • Chain – drop-only gem but only useful for very few builds in the game. The cost is typically 1 Chaos.
    • Multistrike – rewarded from “A Fixture of Fate” quest, otherwise a drop-only gem and fairly rare. It’s being used by almost every melee build in the game, but fortunately that doesn’t reflect its price: it can be obtained for 3 Chaos only.
    • Cast When Stunned – typically you’re able to sell it for 2 Chaos, although it’s much easier to obtain one yourself.
    • Empower – 10-20 Chaos
    • Enhance – 8 Chaos

    What about other gems?

    • Auras are generally sought after and can easily be sold for 1 Fusing or even 1 Chaos each, or 2 Chaos for Purity which is a bit less common. Grace, Hatred and Clarity are likely the most popular ones and easiest to sell.
    • Most attack and similar skill gems (such as Dual Strike, Cleave, Heavy Strike, Raise Skeletons etc.) are extremely easy to come by from the first few quests in the game and you’ll have a tough time trying to find buyers for those.
    • Curses generally can be sold for 1 Alchemy in case someone’s looking for a specific one, but stashing dozens of them and waiting for a seller is usually just a waste of time and space.
    • Support gems are generally what’s being traded the most, even though a majority of them are easy to come by. Players often need multiple so the demand is always there. Support gems that I see sought after on a daily basis are:
      • Reduced Mana
      • Blood Magic
      • Faster Attacks
      • Melee Splash
    • All of the above can fairly easily be sold for 1 Chaos Orb each fairly easily.
    • Slightly less used support gems are Fork, Culling Strike, Mana Leech, Faster Casting, Lesser Multiple Projectiles and Greater Multiple Projectiles, Life Leech, Item Quantity, Item Rarity, Melee Physical Damage, Multiple Traps, Curse on Hit. Most of these sell for 1 Fusing each.

    Note about prices

    As with all things in Path of Exile gem prices are determined by the seller and the buyer, and you may be able to sell them for either lower or higher amount of currency. Trading values (based on Standard league) I provided are just to give you a basic understanding of their potential value in general, so hold your horses.

    What does it all mean?

    If you come across some of these gems or are presented with a choice from a quest, this is roughly your priority:

    1. Gems you need or will use later on
    2. Any higher value gems you can sell
    3. Support gems
    4. Auras

  • Things I Hate About Path of Exile

    I’ve been playing Path of Exile for over 6 months now and I’ve enjoyed it quite a lot. After awhile though you start noticing various problems with any game and PoE is no different, despite still being in beta. There are some game aspects that are just frustrating or confusing and lately it’s been infuriating me on occasion. Here’s my top list of issues I have with this game.

    1. Trading

    No wonder it’s filled with people trying to trade.

    For a game based so much on loot making trading with other players so inconvenient is a mysterious move in my opinion. It’s becoming increasingly annoying for me to try and trade currencies to other players. Usually it involves me spamming at least five different trade channels only to be replied by players who are just trying to take advantage of me, which amounts to borderline scam. For some reason everyone expects a 30% or higher profit yield in currency exchanges and even refuse to negotiate for a reasonable ratio. I often spend an hour or two just sitting idly in Sarn just waiting for someone to offer a regular trade ratio.

    And I shouldn’t even mention trading items. Unless you have a valuable Unique or a GG item chances are you won’t sell it. Again even with somewhat valuable items that are worth a few GCPs you’ll spend hours spamming channels only to be replied by offers of 1 Alchemy and such. It’s no surprise that the public parties window is laden with people selling and buying items and currency, when there’s no alternative system in place to facilitate more convenient trades between players.

    Furthermore making forum topics with shops and/or relying on 3rd party services to help you sell items is just ridiculous for any game. GGG has mentioned that some kind of a trading system will be put in place before the game’s release, and that can’t come any sooner. For those hardass players who are in favor of the current trading system, all I can say is Diablo II was released over a decade ago and it’s time for you to move on. Trading via forums or chat doesn’t make trading impossible, just inconvenient. GGG should encourage trades rather than hinder them, but that’s just my 2c.

    The best solution would be to add an auction house, at least for the casual Standard league. It’s a proven system for trading in online games and it’s unlikely it would be a difficult implementation.

    2. Dependance on Kaom’s Heart

    Luckily it dropped for me, otherwise I’d still farm for it after 6 months of playing.

    Currently my build doesn’t provide much room to remove Kaom’s. By significantly nerfing health bonuses from the passive skill tree in a recent patch GGG has in my opinion made a huge mistake. Before you could have insanely high health and truth be told it needed to be reduced, but by reducing health nodes in the skill tree I am now even more dependent on using Kaom’s Heart. By removing it with my current gear I’m left with 2,700 health which is hardly enough for high-level map farming. And there’s no alternative: with the old health values in my passive I could have 4,000 HP fairly easily and using Kaom at that point wouldn’t be mandatory, in fact I’d gladly remove it.

    It doesn’t seem okay that an entire playstyle is viable only because of one item. Anyone who plays melee builds very likely has to get Kaom’s or risk dying far too often. One solution would be to reduce Kaom’s bonus health by half but increase health nodes in the passive tree to the previous amounts. Likelihood of that happening though is extremely slim.

    3. RNG

    30 days of /played and I still can’t afford this.

    This might come off the wrong way but I’ll include it anyway since it frustrates me beyond belief at times. First of all I don’t mind farming and grinding, in fact I believe it’s one aspect of the game that keeps me going. I’m always hopeful to get a valuable item or at the very least farm enough currency to buy one. However when you’re farming 30 hours a week and get nothing out of it but some low-value currency you start to get increasingly vexed by the futility of the time invested. Looting an amazing item is fun, it keeps me playing, but farming currency to hopefully be able to afford one some day kind of puts me off.

    If you could get currency more consistently then playing for hours on end would feel more rewarding. A possible solution would be to make sure that for (example) every 5 thousand mobs you kill in maps your chances of getting an Exalted Orb increase exponentially up to the point where a drop is almost guaranteed. It would make farming more consistent in terms of value gained and make it at least a bit more bearable. Just this past week I did well over 100 68+ map runs and got nothing out of it; the most valuable loot I got is a couple of Regret and Chaos Orbs. Vendoring hundreds of rare items for Alterations and picking up every single Chromatic won’t get me near Soul Taker anytime soon.

    Here’s something to put things into perspective for you. I have 40 days played (that’s 960 hours spent in game) and all I got to show for it is a total net value of 50 Exalted Orbs (half of which is due to one lucky drop). Barely enough to buy two GG Unique items for my build, Kaom’s Heart and Soul Taker. Is that a reasonable reward for the time invested?

    Path of Exile has numerous character builds I’d love to try out but it’s so damn expensive. It’s not enough to simply level a character to 80+, you need to spend hours upon hours farming maps for specific items to make it viable. Farming hundreds of maps also brings me to my next two points.

    4. Leveling past 85

    Don’t get me wrong, leveling to 100 should be nearly impossible and unattainable to only but a few who can dedicate a gigantic amount of time and effort it takes. But getting stuck at level 85 or so (or 87 in my case) feels like I’ve yet to reach “high-level”. I like the fact that levels are always the carrot on a stick and it’s just one of the reasons why I keep logging in. But unless you have access to 73+ maps  leveling past 87 is nearly impossible. I get less than 1% of my level for a full map run, and chances are every 10-15 runs I’ll do something dumb and die only to lose 3-4 hours of gameplay, experience wise. Getting to those maps requires either a huge amount of currency or friends with huge amounts of currency, neither of which I’m in abundance.

    Getting plenty of 72+ maps to be able to farm consistently is an entirely different problem.

    5. Sustaining map pools


    All my 66 and 67 maps. I barely have any higher level though, and even when I do I quickly run out.

    The only maps I always managed to have plenty of are 66s. A couple of weeks ago I spent an Exalted to buy sixty 68 maps just to try and get a bit closer to higher level maps, again. I managed to turn those 60 maps into about a hundred total but right now I’m almost out of 68s. I did get about fifteen 69s and six 70s but I quickly ran out of those. Sustaining a high-level map pool to me seems impossible if RNG isn’t in your favor. Frankly, spending 4 Chisels and a few Scouring + Alchemy Orbs to get 80+ quantity is a noticeable investment and then not getting a single map drop is irritating. Just yesterday I was in some public group doing blue 70 maps for an hour or so and the guy always got 1-2 level 70 maps in every single run despite extremely low quantity (usually about 20%).

    I tried buying 70 maps, I rolled mazes and 100%+ quantity and whatnot and if the RNG doesn’t favor you it makes absolutely no difference. Sooner or later I fall back to farming 66 maps, hoping to get a few 67s or 68s, all the while spending currency to roll them which barely gets back my investment. From what I can gather most players start having problems with sustaining their 72+ map pools; I can’t seem to get even near that level. Considering I don’t gain any experience from < 72 maps farming them also feels completely futile, and I might as well farm Docks or Lunaris.

    Basically, it doesn’t feel right that unless you have friends in high places you’re getting denied the full endgame experience.

    6. Magic Find

    I feel it’s unfair that having Increased Item Quantity & Rarity is exclusive to practically one build in the game. If this trend continues Sporkers are soon going to be played by half of the population, and the builds popularity is in no way surprising. It’s cheap to get started with and requires practically no defensive stats all the while yielding currency at a consistent rate. With every other skill tree build your gear must focus on defensive and offensive stats, and Sporkers only have to get IIQ/IIR and they’re more than ready for Merciless Docks. I hate to bring another game into the discussion, especially one so hated by the PoE community, but Diablo III had an interesting system implemented in a later patch where Magic Find was a base character stat depending on level rather than being exclusively gained through equipment.

    Considering some of the other points I outlined above perhaps such a system wouldn’t be entirely wrong in Path of Exile either, because getting gear with health, resistances and damage is hard enough without having to think about IIQ & IIR as well.

    7. Item Filtering


    In some maps this covers the entire screen. Good luck finding valuable whites this way.

    If you ever did Coward’s Trial you know why there’s a need for item filtering options. Sometimes there’s so much loot that you literally can’t even see or pick it up because it goes over your screen boundaries. Even in regular maps there are often dozens of monsters and a boss at the same place and you have to spend a minute just looking at the loot and see if there’s anything you missed.

    I probably picked up more 6-socket items because someone missed it in the giant blob of text rather than having them actually drop for me. Before loot allocation options were implemented you could at least filter out white items, now it’s either all or nothing. A customizable item filter for white and blue items would definitely be a welcome addition to the game and I can’t possibly see anyone complaining about it.

    In-game passive skill tree planning, more gem choices, useless currencies (Glassblower’s, Transmutation, Augmentation), accuracy stat (awful mechanic), clearer wording (“More” and “Increased”)… Those are just some of the other minor issues that may or may not be fixed, improved or implemented with time. The game is still in beta and GGG has said multiple times Path of Exile is aimed at “hardcore” gamers, but I can’t help but whine about some of the things that irk me on a daily basis. The 7 outlined issues I have with the game are more of a quality of life change rather than making the game overly casual, at least that’s how I feel about it.

    A couple of years ago I asked Chris from GGG for a small favor and although he had no reason he was very forthcoming. For someone as busy as I’m sure he is to take the time of the day to accommodate me is unprecedented and just one of the reasons why I don’t feel bad at all when buying weapon effects and stash tab bundles. I’ve observed the way he and the rest of the company interacts with the community and I’ve grown very fond of the way they do business. I admire their patience and envy their well-deserved success. I’m not their targeted audience though: I’m a casual player and I’m sure some of my opinions differ from what the majority of the community feels.

    It’s the small things that make a game great and Path of Exile is already there. But there’s always room for improvement and I’m certainly hoping that some of the peeves I have will be eventually addressed.

  • Understanding the Value of Currency

    Even though the currency system in Path of Exile is brilliantly done it can be quite confusing for new players. The game doesn’t follow the traditional “gold” system, instead players are encouraged and required to trade one currency for another with either vendors or other players depending on their needs.

    Certain currency items are more or less difficult to obtain thus the different values and trading ratios are very important to understand. Once you remember all the ratios and start trading with other players it’s almost like a minigame within PoE in which you barter and haggle with others in order to get currency items you need at the best possible price.

    There’s about 20 different currency items (frequently referred to as Orbs) in Path of Exile. I’ll list all of them below along with a short explanation of what they are used for. They are listed (more or less) by rarity, so the first ones listed are very common and easy to obtain while the bottom ones are very expensive and less likely to drop.

    Armourer’s Scrap

    Scraps drop frequently and are very inexpensive, up to the point where finding a buyer for these is even hard. Don’t fret though as you should still always pick them up and use them for Chaos Orb recipe on high level items. Using Armorer’s Scraps also increases your chance to 5 or 6 link gem sockets on an item so if you decide to go for it having a few hundred Armorer’s Scraps might save you more valuable currency later on. You can trade Scraps for Whetstones at vendors.

    Blacksmith’s Whetstone

    Same as Armorer’s Scraps, Whetstones are used to improve an item’s quality up to 20% and are easy to obtain. They drop often from mobs and aren’t used in high amounts. Nevertheless you should still pick them up whenever you can since like everything else in Path of Exile it has its value. You can only trade them for Armourer’s Scraps at vendors.

    Glassblower’s Baubles are used to improve quality of flasks and typically players don’t need a large amount of them. You’ll probably use 100-200 of these at most throughout the game so once you have the best (Hallowed or Sanctified) flasks you won’t need these. They can’t be traded for anything of better value at vendors and I have yet to see a player buying Baubles.

    Orb of Transmutation

    Orb of Transmutation transforms a white (common) item into a blue (magic) one. Very common and mostly used on flasks, lower level maps (66-68) and strongboxes. Usually when I get over 100 of these I just trade them at vendor for Orbs of Augmentation or more often Scrolls of Wisdom.

    Adds an additional stat to a magic item. Some magic items have only one stat and an Augmentation Orb is used to add an affix to them. Very easy to obtain in larger quantities and best traded at vendor for Alteration.

    Chromatic Orb

    Changes gem socket colors on an item. Easy to come by and you will need a lot of them (as in hundreds). I recommend keeping at least 150 of them at all times and trade the surplus for other orbs.

    Replaces current with new random stats on a magic (blue) item. It’s unlikely you will need many of these unless you’re really into crafting items, which you won’t be until very late endgame. I prefer to simply trade them to vendors for more valuable orbs. They are extremely easy to come by.

    Jeweller’s Orb

    Fairly easy to get, Jeweller’s Orbs are used to change the number of sockets on an item. When you get a better piece of gear you’ll surely want to add more sockets to it so you might want to have at least 100 spare Jeweller’s Orbs to spend. If you have extra trade them with vendors for Orb of Fusing.

    This currency orb transforms a white item with no stats into a magic (blue), rare (yellow) or even unique item. Obviously the chances of getting a unique item are slim but it’s well worth using on certain endgame gear (especially Glorious Plates and Siege Axes, both of which can turn into extremely expensive gear). You can just hoard these, chances are you’ll be using all of them. If you don’t want to test your luck, you can vendor them for Orbs of Scouring and Orbs of Regret for fairly decent rates.

    Chisels are used to improve the quantity and rarity of item drops on endgame maps. Even though you won’t be seeing Chisels drop in lower levels they are fairly common but always in high demand. Once you get higher level maps (70+) you will definitely want to improve them with Chisels so keep a few around; you can exchange the rest for Chaos Orbs or some other currency which will probably be more important to you earlier.

    A mid-value orb used to link sockets on an item. They are high in demand and you should always keep 50-80 of them in your stash to be able to link your own items if necessary. To get 5 linked sockets on a piece of gear you’ll need about 150 Fusings and an average of 800 for 6 links (rough estimate, can vary significantly) so players often purchase these in large quantities which makes them extremely easy to trade.

    I tend to use all my Alchemy Orbs (and even buy some occasionally) to turn common (white) high level rings, amulets and belts into rare items. Those pieces of equipment typically don’t drop often and are hard to get sometimes so it’s best to simply pick up white ones with high rolls and turn them into rares, hoping for a decent item. If I don’t get anything good I just use them for Chaos Orb recipe at vendor. Most common use though is on maps.

    This orb removes all stats from a magic or rare item. It’s useful for crafting or rolling maps, but can be somewhat harder to trade with other players. I usually turn them into Orb of Regret at vendor (2:1), since Regrets are always easier to sell.

    Blessed Orb

    Blessed Orbs aren’t used very often but they can be very useful on high quality items. In most cases you’ll just trade them for Chaos Orbs. They are used to change the values of implicit (health on Coral rings, or resistances on Prismatic, etc.) stats on a particular item. Especially useful when rolling higher value Unique items.

    Another mid-value orb and sort of considered the main currency of the game. They are somewhat easy to obtain later on in the game but also very quick to spend. Always in high demand, and any other currency item can always be traded for Chaos Orbs.

    Chaos Orbs often serve as sort of an anchor for trading, meaning most other currencies and their exchange ratios are just translated into Chaos Orbs.

    Vaal Orb

     Frequent drop with same drop rate as Chaos, Vaal is used to modify items randomly. It can turn unique items into rare ones, break socket links or even add Prismatic (white) sockets. Important to note that once you use a Vaal Orb on an item you can’t use any other currency on it, that includes Fusings, Jewellers, Eternals and even Whetstones and Scraps.

    There’s always someone who wants to re-spec their passive skill tree and allocate a point or a few differently, thus Orbs of Regret are highly valued. Unless you really messed up your skill tree build you won’t need dozens of them (plus you get about 15 free respec points from quests), but do try and keep about 5-10 of them in your stash. You might need to allocate a point into resist after changing your gear or figure out a shorter path to a certain keystone passive after awhile so having a few extra Regrets doesn’t hurt.

    Regal Orbs are used for crafting, more specifically turning a magic item into a rare one. Do note that when using a Regal your now rare item will get one additional stat and will retain the stats from the blue item, but unless you have plenty of Exalted Orbs to spend to craft further don’t even bother with this. In a majority of cases you should just trade your Regal Orbs for Chaos. Definitely not recommended using on low level gear while you’re leveling.
    Gemcutter’s PrismGemcutter's Prism High value orb and pretty darn rare as a monster drop, Gemcutter’s Prism (GCP) is used to improve the quality of a gem. Never use these on gems with no quality whatsoever, in fact make sure your skill gem has at least 15% quality before you try and improve it. Even then the Prism should only be used if you’re filthy rich and with decent gear already. Before you decide to spend these rare and valuable orbs make sure you know exactly what you’re getting by improving a gem (auras for example only add fairly useless range). Also most useful 20% (max) quality gems cost 1 Exalted Orb which trades for about 10 Gemcutter’s Prisms, thus the aforementioned 15%. Remember, there’s also a recipe for quality gems!

    Divine Orb

    Another high value orb used for crafting and as such unlikely an average player will be needing it early in the game. Feel free to sell it for GCP or Chaos. Divine Orbs are used to reroll explicit (as opposed to implicit; look under Blessed Orb above) item stats to random values, most commonly used on unique items: if you get a low-roll but still valuable unique item you can use a Divine and hope for better stats. High or perfectly rolled uniques are typically more expensive than those with average stat rolls so Divine Orbs can add quite a bit of value to them.

    Exalted Orb

    Extremely rare to find and always in demand. If you ever see this baby drop you better click like mad and hope the servers don’t crash. It’s used for adding additional mods (stats) to a rare item, something you should probably never do unless you have dozens or even hundreds of Exalteds to spend. You will have absolutely no trouble trading them for any other orb in the game. Some of the best and most expensive items in the game cost dozens and even hundreds of Exalted Orbs so don’t waste them ever, especially on low level items!

     Eternal Orb

    Eternal Orbs are used to “remember” stats, socket number and colors on a single item and later restore them if your crafting attempts don’t pan off. For example if you had a great 5-linked chest and want to try and 6-link it, you can use an Eternal Orb before you start and later on easily restore 5-links (which are hard to get as well). Eternals are expensive and very rare so don’t use them unless you really know what you’re doing!

    Mirror of Kalandra

    Extremely expensive and almost impossible to find, the Mirror makes an exact duplicate of an existing non-unique item. It’s pretty much worth as much as the most expensive item in game is, meaning it sells for over 100 Exalted Orbs in Standard league and if you get one you’re encouraged to donate it to me.

    Two other notable items are Scrolls of Wisdom and Portal Scrolls. You’ll be getting tons of these are in majority of cases they are next to useless, however some players are lazy to constantly pick them up so I’ve managed to sell 100 Scrolls of Wisdom for 1 Chaos Orb several times so far. If you don’t mind picking them up you might get lucky and sell them.

    Trading Ratios

    As I mentioned already everything in Path of Exile has a certain value. The prices of orbs are determined by the frequency of their drops, vendor exchange prices and recipes, and player demand (probably in that order). If a vendor exchanges 4 Jeweller’s Orbs for 1 Orb of Fusing obviously the players exchange them in the same ratio; on the other hand if for some weird reason Jeweller’s Orbs started dropping in extreme amounts from now on chances are the prices would change.

    The economy in PoE is basically based on supply and demand, therefore knowing the exact prices and exchange ratios of orbs is extremely important unless you want to throw away “money” for no reason.

    Vendor exchange ratios

    I briefly wrote on this topic in another post but I’ll repeat some of the key points here. Vendors can exchange basic currencies for you so for most low-value Orbs you don’t have to bother finding players to trade with. Here’s what vendors have to offer:

    Jeweller’s Orb x3 Chromatic x1 Not worth it unless you desperately need one or two Chromatics.
    Augmentation Orb x4 Alteration x1 Worth it when you end up with tons of Augmentations after awhile.
    Alteration Orb x2 Jeweller’s Orb x1 Same value.
    Orb of Fusing x1 Orb of Chance x1 Not worth it as 1 Fusing is worth 4 Chance Orbs.
    Jeweller’s Orb x4 Orb of Fusing x1 Market value.
    Orb of Regret x1 Orb of Alchemy x1 Not worth it (2.5 Alchemy = 1 Regret in player trades).
    Orb of Chance x4 Orb of Scouring x1 Market value.
    Orb of Scouring x2 Orb of Regret x1 Market value.

    The basic system I use for getting rid of low value orbs is: Transmutation > Augmentation > Alteration > Jeweller’s > Fusing. Fusings are also easiest to trade with other players and the ratios are pretty standard (2 Fusings for 1 Chaos at the time of writing this). You can also vendor Transmutations for Scrolls of Wisdom, and then sell Scrolls to players.

    Player exchange ratios

    You can view currency exchange ratios here, I keep it updated constantly and it’s usually way more accurate than other resources. It’s based on “Standard” league and the prices are a bit different in other leagues such as Hardcore, so take that into account. Some currencies can’t be “downgraded” via vendors which also means that players may be selling them at a slight loss.

    A small sidenote: prices often fluctuate slightly up to 15%. It’s especially important to consider that high value Orbs (especially Exalted) are often sold for a bit more than they’re usually worth (although technically they’re worth exactly as much as someone is willing to pay for them). You could spend days on end just trading one currency for another in Path of Exile and make a profit off of that.


    The currency system isn’t overly complex and you’ll get the hang of it pretty fast. Just make sure you remember exactly how much an Orb is worth and what’s the best way to trade it. Take a screenshot of currency exchange values and set it as your desktop wallpaper if necessary (but remember, values and rates constantly change!).
